Not too long ago, elementary school children were encouraged to pick up a pen and write to a pen pal in another classroom located in another state, sometimes in another country. The thought was that these written communications would help develop the child’s reading and writing skills, expressive abilities and imagination while introducing them to children who live in a different part of the country or world. Expanded horizons, increased awareness of the world and possibly the acquisition of a lifelong friend were just some of the many benefits these pen pal relationships. Thanks to incredible advancements in technology over the last few decades, students now have the ability to reach out to one another over the internet and have immediate, real-time conversations. The use of webcams takes this contact to an even higher level, as students from around the globe can now talk to each other as they look at one another, and view each other’s classrooms. However, through the use of remote desktop software, also known as remote control software, these students now have the ability to directly connect with computers of other students in order to help further their education and develop their communication skills.

 

PC Remote Access, also known as Remote Desktop Software, allows a computer user to completely access and control a second computer. The computer being accessed will be fully represented on the screen of the user making access, so they will be able to use that machine in the same way they would if they were sitting in front of it. These connections are typically used for technical support and business applications, but more and more learning institutions are learning of the incredible opportunities these programs present, especially to younger children. In this article we will take a look at some ways in which elementary schools can leverage remote control software.

 

Cultural Education – Bringing children together on a group project can sometimes present a challenge to the teacher. Keeping the children focused, organized and contributing to the project can be a difficult task to manage. A good way to keep the children interested and focused is through the use of Remote Control Software. Using these programs children can make a direct and real-time connection with kids in classrooms located anywhere in the world. Let’s say, for example, that children in a United States classroom are doing a group project on Australia. They have spent time researching on the web, and have watched videos and read books to help them understand the Australian way of life. While this is a tried and true method for learning about foreign cultures, it is still one that is able to be drastically improved upon. Rather than simply performing disconnected research, the children could be actively engaging with children in an Australian classroom. Video web conferences could easily be set-up that would allow the children to see and talk to each other in real time. Taking it a step further, the Australian children could view the work the American children have completed, and tell them how accurately it represents their everyday lifestyles. Common misconceptions could be cleared up, little known facts could be learned, and long lasting friendships could be formed, all through the use of remote desktop software.
